Reward Friday

The class picked that their February behavior reward be a "sit where you want day." So after receiving instruction they were able to get cozy on the floor and start their studies. I was a little hesitant but the day turned out well.

Grammar Flip Books

We have been working hard in English class and decided to make a flip book to file all of our knowledge. Each student had an instruction sheet with requirements and definitions and then they took creative liberties making their book. I think they turned out awesome and will be a great resource as we prepare for the "big test."

What an Awesome Week!

What a great week to be in the Fifth Grade. The class went to the FFA Pumpkin Patch on Monday. After coming up with several ideas we decided our pumpkin was going to be a Minion from Despicable Me.
Thursday was our class Halloween Party. Towards the end of the day we found out that our pumpkin took first place!
On Friday the exciting news kept coming. We had been working hard all month collecting box tops. Our goal was to collect 1,000, unfortunately we came up a little short with 977. But it was enough to win 1st place in a JHES competition and we won the ice cream party!

We just completed a writing assignment entitled Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and I'm very pleased with the results. First each student brainstormed 20 interesting descriptive words. After that they came up with 3 foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Then the writing began and they produced some amazing work. Check out a few samples of their work here - Sausage rocketing from the sky, Down pour of Pepsi, Sugary syrup drizzled from the sky,and Gross brussel sprouts shot down like bullets.

A Busy First Month

The 2013-2014 school year is underway and we have been in school for almost one month! The 5th grade class has been keeping busy in the classroom, some of the things include - Reading - We are currently broke up into three novel groups and are reading One Crazy Summer, The Witches, and The BFG. Math - The 5th grade class just started working on the Multiplication Unit in math. Some students might need some practice using flash cards. Writing - We are finishing up our first topic, Ideas, in 6-Trait Writing. Social Studies - The class just finished a research project on Native American tribes in North America. So far we have had a great start to the year and hopefully we will continue this success throughout the months to come.
