Word Choice

Assignment - If you were going to write a description of the picture below, what could you say?  As a group write six strong descriptive phrases to describe the picture below.

Let's Get Ready to Test!

The days we have been prepping for all year long are fast approaching.  On April 10, 11, and 12 we will be testing for reading and math.  Please try to keep these days open so don't schedule any appointments during those days.  Please make sure your child has a good night's rest and a full stomach in the morning, we don't want any unwelcome distractions.  We are welcoming volunteers to bring treats so if you're interested let Mr. Fenton and myself know.  We are confident we're going to do great and continue on with the great tradition we have here at Jackson Heights.

Snowman Technical Writing

We practiced our technical writing by creating snowmen.  Then the students had to write detailed directions on how to create their snowman.  The classes switched directions with one another and had to try and create their partner's snowman on their directions alone.  Some of the students did an excellent job with their directions and their snowmen looked almost like twins.  Others learned how detailed your directions really need to be.

PB & J Anyone?

Last week in reading class we were talking about the steps in a process so as a writing activity I had the class write the process for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  Then on Thursday we tested out those steps by making a PB & J sandwich by following our partner's directions.  Some of the students successfully wrote the process but others had to eat the sandwich in two parts because their partner forgot to write the step - put the two slices of bread together.  Others had to get the peanut butter out with the knife but spread it with their fingers because their partner simply wrote - spread the peanut butter instead of - get the peanut butter out of the jar with a knife and then spread it.  Overall, it was a success and I think the students learned how specific you need to be when it comes to writing.
